ATIXA July 2021 Legislative Policy Corner

Supporting the Patsy T. Mink and Louise M. Slaughter Gender Equity in Education Act

ATIXA is pleased to announce that Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii) has re-introduced the Gender Equity in Education Act (GEEA) this Congress (S. 2186). ATIXA worked with Senator Hirono’s office to make sure the Act covered needed protections within Title IX. If passed, the GEEA would provide additional resources, training, and technical assistance to combat harassment and discrimination in education. Specifically, the bill aims to create a new Office for Gender Equity within the U.S. Department of Education to coordinate Title IX activities in the Department and throughout other federal agencies, fund competitive grants for K-12 schools, colleges and universities, states, school districts, and other educational organizations to boost Title IX compliance programs and provide Title IX coordinators with annual training, information, and best practices about Title IX compliance. This bill directly correlates with ATIXA’s mission and helps further the worthy goal of gender equity. Please see the press release here.

Let’s take ACTION on the BIG Act

Our sister organization, NABITA, has continued to focus its efforts on passing the BIG Act into law. NABITA announced in March that the BIG Act passed the House and is now awaiting consideration in the Senate. We would greatly appreciate it if you would reach out to your Senators and ask them to support the BIG Act, S. 1383. For your convenience, NABITA has created a BIG Act webpage with a draft of a sample email and all the information you need to reach out!

Let’s please do our part in helping to get the BIG Act get passed in the Senate!
