Angela M. Catena, PhD (she/her), is a dynamic leader with over 13 years of experience in higher education, specializing in Title IX compliance, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and civil rights. As the Title IX Coordinator at the University of New Mexico (UNM), Angela leads campus-wide efforts to ensure adherence to federal, state, and institutional policies, overseeing investigations and resolutions of sex-based harassment and discrimination cases. She spearheaded the development of a Deputy Title IX Coordinator network, enhancing collaboration and efficiency across the university system. Angela played a pivotal role in successfully concluding UNM’s agreement with the Department of Justice in 2019, ensuring full compliance with Title IX standards.
Angela’s extensive background in policy development includes crafting and implementing innovative strategies that have measurably improved campus safety and inclusivity. She has led educational programming and training sessions on Title IX, VAWA, and equal opportunity for university leadership, faculty, staff, and students. Her expertise in trauma-informed care, advocacy, and conflict resolution has made her a trusted advisor on creating safe, equitable environments.
Prior to her current role, Angela served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Arizona State University, where she designed graduate-level courses and mentored students through clinical placements and research projects. She has also worked as a Training and Development Specialist at the UNM LoboRESPECT Advocacy Center, where she implemented programs on consent, bystander intervention, and trauma-informed care. Angela’s dedication to fostering inclusive environments and her strategic vision has made a lasting impact on every institution she has served.
