Kaaren has a Phd in organizational leadership, policy, and development from the University of Minnesota, and her dissertation addressed the limitations of the traditional response to sexual misconduct and the possibilities of restorative justice. She co-founded Campus PRISM (Promoting Restorative Initiatives for Sexual Misconduct) and is a restorative justice facilitator trainer and consultant. She is co-editor of the Applying Restorative Justice to Campus Sexual Misconduct: A guide to Emerging Practices published in 2023 from Routledge.
