Why did you become a member of ATIXA and why have you remained a member to this day?
I became a member to get the most comprehensive information possible about Title IX; I was a member of NABITA at the time and knew that TNG Consulting provided solid information and guidance. When the 2011 Dear Colleague Letter was released, our institution knew it needed to step up and I was ready to assist in that process. I became certified and have remained a member for the same reasons. We consistently have received the information and guidance needed to continue to do this work with confidence in our processes at all levels.
What is a challenge you face doing Title IX work?
The lack of staff and budget; this area only seems valued if it never comes to the attention of the administration. No lawsuits or complaints is good work when the difficulty and the level of risk in this area is so high. I also worry about our staff doing this work because of vicarious or secondary trauma; it is an emotionally difficult position.
What is a successful achievement you have had doing Title IX work?
Overall we have a great relationship with the Title IX Coordinator, and that had allowed for the development of a very good process and support systems for our students involved in TIX cases.
What is an ATIXA resource or tool that has aided you?
Ongoing training via webinars, workshops, and the certification courses.
What is the value of ATIXA membership for you?
I think our ATIXA membership is a great value for us.
How has ATIXA helped you to be a better professional?
By keeping me up to date on the legal changes and how to implement them on our campus.
What is one way you practice self-care doing such intense work?
I walk almost every day after work, and I meditate before I go to sleep.
What is one piece of advice you would offer your fellow practitioners?
You must take care of yourself or it will catch up with you.
